1.
Stand on the bridge, over the freeway, Strip mall signs waiting for their time to shine Monolith beside me, dark ribbon below Built for machines, spread out wide to grow Distant blue giants, forests on their backs, Ominous and graceful, a bounty and a threat Will we be sated? Will we get better, Plodding ever forward, onward into flames?
2.
Beaverton TC 03:36
Where do I go when I’m looking to catch the bus to Tualatin? Where do I go when I’m aiming for the heart of the county known as Washington? Where must those wayward, west side children go When they wreck their BMX bikes beside the road? They’ve got to get on that mass transit And make a connection at the Beaverton TC Those new trains don’t smell too terribly strange Beaverton TC Who says the west side is way out of range? Beaverton TC Where I know that I’ll be able to find my way home Beaverton TC Where can I see all the people shuffling off to work in their sensible shoes, Doug firs and big box shops, bike paths and concrete lots? There are some shelters from the pouring rain, A place of waiting, place of being alive, A place where strangers deign to congregate And make a connection at the [Repeat Chorus] [Instrumental Break] [Repeat Chorus]
3.
Gateway to the east, Gateway to the airport, Gateway to downtown, Hillsboro or Gresham This transit center’s a gateway Leading to so many other harder ones, Rose Quarter or Hollywood, Lents, Gresham, Clackamas, or Sunset [Chorus] No matter how you arrived here, Bus or train or park and ride, or maybe the bike path, You will enter the gateway, Portal to so many Portland ports of import [Chorus] You can stay here for a little while, But arriving means you’re bound to depart Whate’er your walk of life, you’ve made it here Just like the office drones, jet setters and dealers This transit center’s a gateway Leading to so many other harder ones, Rose Quarter or Hollywood, Lents, Gresham, Clackamas, or Sunset [Chorus]
4.
Gresham Central in the rain, A sighing train, the little void inside me The mountain’s shrouded in the east, For now at least, there’s nothing else to look for They took the sofa and the chair, And raised the fare, there’s nothing to see here We need a place to go and some way to get there When this world feels small, but so spread apart We need a living room, not just the private space We work all day just to afford The cold, wet concrete smell is strong, The wait is long; they cut the service again The bus I need has gone away, Another day, another missed connection I kick a stone off of the curb, It feels absurd to be so stranded here [Chorus] What’s it even for when I walk out of the door To a million places I don’t belong? After every inch is owned, And there’s nowhere left to roam, Will we realize how much we’ve lost? [Chorus]
5.
Mount Scott is shining in the air Bright light refractions burn away every care And distant, swaying evergreens Gaze down upon the mass of motor machines and strip malls The evening breeze feels like a welcoming embrace, And soon you’ll get to take off that stupid polo shirt Maybe you’ll find some time to see friends face to face, For a night, all the night is yet to come Mount Scott is shining in the air Bright light illuminates machines taking fare The screech and rattle of the tracks, Anticipation as you see the next MAX train and know You will not suffer at that counter anymore, Well at least no more until tomorrow No mopping grime up off that greasy food court floor, For a night, for a night it’s in the past Mount Scott is shining in the air Nothing to do but sit back, space out and stare Clack! Clack! Someday, you think, someday These clacking wheels will carry you far away from here

about

Transit centers, transit hubs, transit stops, public transportation in general: none of these feature prominently in the pop cultural landscape, and yet they play a huge role in the lives of countless people, and in the physical and social landscape of most metropolitan areas. The Transit Suite is a collection of 5 songs about 5 different Portland-area transit centers and was inspired by my experiences of these transit centers as well as the beauty, struggles, and emotions of everyday life.

The digital EP download includes a digital (pdf) zine with photos, musings, lyrics and transit center trivia!
